Thats cool you watched it, I've heard a lot about it too but I feel the same way about anime, awesome animation but way too crazy for me. Although I've heard awesome things about some other anime that has a cover picture of a floating yellow sugar glider type creature, don't recall the title but I think it has "po" in the title...haha
Guess I'll have to watch it. My daughter is waaaaay into Anime and Manga and draws a lot in that style (she's getting good at it too!). She's watching anime all the time.
Eh, forget Ninja Scroll. People who think anime isn't for them just haven't found the right anime (because not all anime is either Hiroshima metaphors or school girls wearing inappropriate clothing.) Instead watch Samurai Champloo, FLCL, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Paranoia Agent. Seriously, less abstract than Akira and way more fun. Except Evangelion, that's still pretty trippy...
I was left unimpressed by it as well, though I've been told the story unfolds much better in the original Japanese version. (With English dubbing, I mean.)
Perhaps you should take a look at "Spirited Away" or "The Secret of NIMH" They're children's films, but still pretty cool in their own right and about ten times less than intense than Akira.

Goddammit... I was gonna do the "Tetsuooooo" thing but I got beat to it. Yeah, it was an alright movie (I'd totally take Samurai Jack over it anyday).
I have all the books... and they're much better in my opinion. The story is really expanded and the characters are more interesting than in the movie.
I find it really hard to watch the movie. aside from the animation I just don't think it's as good as it could have been.
